Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province and is composed of the three towns of Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang. The three towns, separated by the Yangtze and Hanshui rivers, are linked by bridges, and because these municipalities are so closely connected by waterways, Wuhan is also called the "City on Rivers" or “City of Rivers” Being the largest inland port on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and a major stop on the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Wuhan is one of China‘s most important hubs of water and rail transportation and communications.

Wuhan has an old history and rich cultural traditions. It began to prosper as a commercial town about two thousand years ago, when it was called Yingwuzhou (Parrot beach). From 1st century to the beginning of 3rd century, the towns of Hanyang and Wuchang began to take shape. During the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the area became one of the most prosperous commercial centers along the Yangtze River. By the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Hankou had become one of the four most famous cities in China. Today, Wuhan is the political, economic, and cultural center of Central China. It boasts of one of China‘s leading iron and steel complexes -- the Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation. Wuhan is also a city with a strong revolutionary tradition.

Tourist sites

Yellow Crane Pagoda

Huanghelou (Yellow Crane Pagoda), located near the southern end of the Yangtze River Bridge in Wuhan, is one of China's most famous towers. The Pagoda inspired many ancient poets and artists. Following is one example, written by Li Bai during the Tang Dynasty:

My old friend
Bids farewell to me
In the west at Yellow Crane Tower.
Amid April's mist and flowers
He goes down to Yang-jou.
The distant image
Of his lonely sail
Disappears in blue emptiness,
And all I see
Is the Long River
Flowing to the edge of the sky.

This foremost symbol of Wuhan, the original Yellow Crane
Pagoda is said to have existed in the 3rd century. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. It was destroyed last in 1884; the current reconstruction was completed in 1986.

The
Pagoda complex consists of the tower, a garden, and a promenade with shops--along with several other buildings.

East Lake, the largest inner-city lake in China, is in the Wuchang district of the city. It has a vast expanse of water (thirty- three square kilometers), with winding banks and willow trees. The surrounding area is divided naturally into several scenic areas among which Millstone Hill (Moshan) is the most attractive with flowers blooming all the year round-orchids in spring, lotus in summer, osmanthus in autumn, and plum blossoms in winter. The many beautiful buildings at the edge of the lake include Land of Water and Cloud (Shuiyunxiang) which serves as a teahouse, Listening to the Waves Tower (Tingtaoxuan), where the visitor can get a panoramic view of the lake, Poetry-Reciting Pavilion (Xingyinge), Lakeside Art Gallery (Binhuhualang), the Memorial Hall of Qu Yuan (340-278 B.C.), infinite Sky Tower (Changtianlou) which can accommodate a thousand visitors for tea, and Lu Xun Square. The park is dotted with lotus and fish ponds, as well as fruit trees (pear and orange) and luxuriant bamboo groves. The nineteen- meter-high Lake View Pavilion (Huguangge) stands on an island in the lake and is a fine vantage point from where to view the entire area. Gulls and swan geese which gather at East Lak ein winter are another attraction to visitors here.

This four-hundred-year-old Buddhist temple stands in a wooded area of the Hanyang district. The picturesque compound of the temple includes a huge hall that houses five hundred skillfully scrlptured arhat statues, each different from the other in bodily posture and facial expression -- sitting, sleeping, laughing, angry. The temple also boasts of a rich collection of stone carvings, paintings, and Buddhist scriptures.

Heptachord Terrace,

also named Boya Terrace, is located on the bank of Moon Lake, western foot of Tortoise Hill in Hanyang district. Story goes that Yu Boya used to be a famous musician in Chu kingdom during the Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 B.C.). Although good at musical instrument, he was always depressed for few people can keenly comprehended his music. One day, on his way back to his country after a diplomatic mission, he was blocked here by a sudden heavy rain. When it cleared up, Yu Boya played a piece of music. Zhong Ziqi, a woodcutter, understood quite well the message conveyed in Boya's music - a vivid description of mountains and rivers, then traced the music and found Yu Boya. Thus the two became bosom friends. One year later, when Ziqi died, Boya, knowing there would be no one else to appreciate the beauty of his music, smashed his lute in grief and never again played music. Later people built this terrace in memory of the friends.

The original terrace was built in the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127), experiencing several destroys and rebuilds, the present one was the result of construction in 1957. Heptachord Terrace now is a notable scenic spot in Wuhan.

Located in the Mill Hill Precinct of the East Lake Scenic Spot of Wuchang, it is originally built in 1987, extending five square kilometers. The scenic spots with the theme of Chu culture are: Chu Town, Chu City, Chutian Tower, Chuci Teahouse, Chucai Garden, Lisao (a kind of literary style) Stele, the statue of Zhu Rong etc. The whole spot is well laid out, with antique flavoured Chu culture everywhere. On the Mill Hill there are also the biggest Miniature Garden and Azalea Garden of Hubei, one of the biggest plum gardens: East Lake Plum Garden, Rosebush Garden, Aquatic Flower Garden, Cherries Pavilion, Sweet-scented Osmanthus Pavilion and so on. There are as well matched Chushan Tram Rail, Sideways and other entertainments welcomed by a great numbers of visitors.

Yangtze River Bridge (First Bridge on the Yangtze River)

Wuchang and Hanyang are linked by this great bridge - it‘s more than 1100m long (1670m with approach) and 80m high with one level for automobiles and another for trains. The completion of the bridge in 1957 marked one of Communist China‘s first great engineering achievements, because until then all road and rail traffic had to be laboriously ferried across the river. A second Trans-Yangtze bridge in northern Wuhan was completed in mid-1995.

Hubei Provincial Museum

The Hubei Provincial Museum includes many artifacts excavated from ancient tombs, including a magnificent and unique ancient bronze concert bell set (bianzhong). A dance and orchestral show is given here, using reproductions of the original instruments.

The Rock and Bonsai Museum includes a magnificent mounted platybelodon skeleton, many unique and finely figured rocks, a giant quartz crystal (as large as an automobile) and an outdoor garden with miniature trees in the penjing ("Chinese Bonsai ") style.

Trips to the Three Gorges Dam

Some luxury Riverboat tours begin here after a flight from Beijing or Shanghai, with several days of flatland cruising and then climbing through the Three Gorges with passage upstream past the Gezhouba and Three Gorges dams to the city of Chongqing. With the completion of the dam a number of cruises now start from the upstream side and continue east, with tourists traveling by motor coach from Wuhan. Although there is no longer the excitement of fast water cruising through the three gorges, and some of the historic wall carvings will soon be underwater, much of the drama of the high cliffs and narrow passages remains.

Han Street,

which lies in the south of Chu River, is 1500 meters long and covers 180,000 square meters. When you have a walk in it , you may feel that you are seemed in the picture of ' Riverside Scenes at the Qingming Festival '.There are more than 300 first-class brands in it including foods, gifts, clothes, entertainments and so forth. The buildings of this street are mostly the Mingguo style, with current fashionable style and European style architecture interspersing in them. From these different kinds of buildings, we can easily find people's respect to history and the vision to the future.

Transportation

First bridge seen from HanyangChang Jiang Bridge at Wuhan was built over the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) in 1957, carrying the railroad directly across the river between Snake Hill (on the left in the picture below) and Turtle Hill. Before this bridge was built it could take up to an entire day to barge railcars across. Including its approaches, it is 5,511 feet (1680 m) long, and it accommodates both a double-track railway on a lower deck and a four lane roadway above. It was built with the assistance of advisers form the Soviet Union, it is therefore a strange piece of Stalinist architecture in the middle of China.

The roads expressways and bridges

The second bridge, a cable-stayed bridge, built of pre-stressed concrete, has a central span of 400 meters The Wuhan Second Changjiang Bridge is 4,678 meters in length (including 1,877 meters of the main bridge) and 26.5 to 33.5 meters in width. Its main bridgeheads are 90 meters high each, pulling 392 thick slanting cables together in the shape of double fans, so that the central span of the bridge is well poised on the piers and the bridge's stability and vibration resistance are ensured. With six lanes on the deck, the bridge is designed to handle 50,000 motor vehicles passing every day. The bridge was completed in 1995

The third bridge

The Third Wuhan Changjiang Bridge was completed in September 2000. Located 8.6 kilometers southwest of the First Bridge, construction of Baishazhou Bridge started in 1997. With an investment of over 1.4 billion yuan (about 170 million U.S. dollars), the bridge, which is 3,586 meters long and 26.5 meters wide, has six lanes and has a capacity of 50,000 vehicles a day. The bridge is expected to serve as a major passage for the future Wuhan Ring Road, enormously easing the city's traffic and aiding local economic development.

Railway

The city proper in Wuhan is served by three railway stations:The Hankou railway station is located in in the north of the city and Wuchang railway station in the south. Wuhan Railway Station is located at Yangchunhu Lake.It is at the junction of Castle Peak and Yang Hongshan Lake on the eastern side, adjacent to the Third Link, for the Wuhan-Guangzhou. The Wuhan Railway Station has 11 platforms, a total of 20 track, including the four lines and are made to line 16.
